First time applications or renewals

Please bring all the pertinent original documents to the appointment. The Consulate will certify the copies against the originals for the application.
Child applicants who were born abroad and have never before had a Swedish passport must first be added to the Swedish population register by applying for a coordination number.

All foreign nationals – including U.S. citizens – who plan to move to Sweden or stay in Sweden for more than 90 days need to obtain a residence permit before entering the country.
Applications for residence permits are processed by the Swedish Migration Agency in Sweden and most applications for residence permits are submitted online through the Migration Agency website. Applications for residence permit for visit are processed by the Migration Agency in Sweden but are submitted to the Embassy. Information on how to apply and information on required documents can be found on the Embassy website – Residence Permits for Visits – Sweden Abroad
If you have been requested to book an appointment for an interview in a resident permit case (normally for the purpose of family ties) we will get back to you with a date and time for interview.

Applicants that have been informed by the Migration Agency to show their passport in original at the Embassy, can do so without booking an appointment. Please use any of our available walk-in dates and times without an appointment. No other time slots are available.
The Embassy is open for walk-ins for passport controls on Fridays from 9.00am to 10am (please see our website for dates when the Embassy is closed – Contact info – Sweden Abroad).
Important notice: Walk-in for passport controls only applies to applicants that have applied for a resident permit for the purpose of visiting, studying or working in Sweden. Applicants of other types of residence permits (family ties, for example) will have to contact the Embassy in Washington DC to schedule an appointment to conduct an interview.
American and Canadian citizens are visa exempt for a stay of up to 90 days in Sweden.
Schengen visa applications for third country nationals residing in the U.S or Canada (that are not visa exempt) are to be submitted to our external service provider, VFS Global.
Please visit the VFS global websites below for more information on required documentation and how to apply.
The processing time for an application for Schengen visa is generally 15 days from the day that the Embassy receives the application. Applications can be submitted up to six months in advance.
Please take into account that it will take a couple of days for VFS to forward an application to the Embassy of Sweden in Washington D.C. after it has been received by VFS.
